You will love our emphasis on your comfort and your education. In addition to your comfort, one of our primary objectives is to educate you. We feel strongly that you need to understand the relationship between the health of your gums and of your mouth and the effect this can have on your overall health and wellness. Most adults have some form of gum disease.Research shows that if you have gum disease, you face a significantly higher risk of developing chronic debilitating diseases, ranging from heart disease, stroke, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease to osteoporosis and diabetes complications.
Swollen, red, tender, or bleeding gums may be a sign of disease and a source of chronic infection. Without professional intervention, the bacteria from this chronic infection can result in bad breath, tooth looseness, and /or loss of teeth, receding gums, and bone degeneration in the jaw. The same bacteria that causes gum disease is implicated in the systemic relationship of gum disease and overall health.
Most adults can avoid gum disease by attending preventive dental care visits. Every six months, attend a dental cleaning (prophy) with our hygienist. She will clean your teeth and record important information about the condition of your gums. In addition, she will explain your condition, treat infection, and closely monitor the condition. We want to team up with you so that you can achieve optimum gum health, fresh breath, and a beautiful smile. If periodontal pockets of infection exist at your gum line, you may need a deep cleaning.
A deep cleaning involves non-surgical scaling and root planing. With scaling, the hygienist removes hardened plaque (called either tartar or calculus) from below the gum line. Root planing is smoothing rough areas on teeth roots where plaque tends to build up. After your initial deep cleaning, your hygienist will schedule periodontal maintenance visits so she can continue to monitor your condition and address recurring infection before it develops into further problems.
